Bangladesh being a riverine country consist more than 300 big and small rivers all over the country the requirement of dredging, as a tool for developing and maintaining its navigation channels needs no mention. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), under the Ministry of Shipping is vested by the government of Bangladesh to carry out dredging works related to inland waterways as government plans to dredge the rivers in an effort to reduce potential flooding that inevitably follows regularly occurring natural disasters and to make the rivers more navigable. Most of the rivers in the country carry and deposit huge amount of silt. There is at present an immense market for dredging in Bangladesh in Public-private partnership program. Also we are to work in capital dredging programs under BIWTA in major rivers. The demand for dredging is very much a long term commitment , In last few years, it is observed from the dredging demand received from the Govt. and private organizations and associations that approximately 100 lakh cubic meter dredging per year is required to maintain the navigability of inland waterways.
Intraco group is listed as a private sector partner when the government searched for assistance, adding dredging to their many specialties. Of course, the dredges will create new employment opportunities in Bangladesh. With the forecasting to enter into the dredging industry we want to save our hard earning foreign currency.
